Every once in a while, a game comes along that takes graphics and character control that most of us are familiar with to a whole new level. In my opinion, that game is “Lucidity” by LucasArts. Released on October 7, 2009, “Lucidity” takes place in a sort of “dream world” unlike anything you’ve seen before. Add in a puzzle-like feel to the game with a brilliant original soundtrack, and you’ve got a game that will keep your interest for quite some time.

We meet Sofi, the main character in this game, right off the bat. As we begin the actual game, we realize that Sofi is not controllable…as one might expect from a 2-D scroller. Rather, you are given puzzle pieces (such as planks to walk across, a shoe with spings to jump higher, a fan to swiftly lift you up high into the air, a slingshot to propel you forward, or stairs to climb, for example) to place in front of Sofi for her to use. The object of the game is to collect fireflies that are placed high and low throughout each level. Trust me when I tell you that it will take more than one pass through each level to collect all fireflies. If you do not place your puzzle pieces correctly, you stand a chance of falling to your death in a mess of thorns or, depending on the amount of health you have left, just running into a creature or two. If a puzzle piece doesn’t work for you, just store it for use later. You may also swap puzzle pieces if you have one in storage already.

I cannot say enough about the graphics. They are absolutely beautiful. The graphics were drawn by hand. The best way I can describe it (in non-gaming terms) is when you cut and glue colored construction paper to make a 2-D picture on a piece of paper. It’s like that…but completely animated. As you progress through each of the 27 levels, the landscapes will change. Each adds a bit more difficulty and also adds a new tool (the puzzle pieces) for Sofi to use to help her through to the other side.

The original musical score is very nice, too. The music is very melodic and relaxing…as I would imagine it to be in a dream. The strings and piano fit perfectly with the scenery in each level and has a curious feeling almost like “What’s next for Sofi?”

The gameplay can seem slow for some, but don’t let that fool you. This game can be very challenging…especially when you’re looking for just the right puzzle piece. And, as you make your way through the levels, you’ll soon find out that you are rushing to find just the right pieces to get up to that next ledge or pathway. It’s not as easy as it looks. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give this game a 9. For 800 Microsoft points, this was an immediate buy for me just for the graphics and musical score alone. Add in the original game play, and you’ve got yourself a really good XBLA title.
