Going along with the War World Giveaway this week we've got Morten Brodersen and Johnni Christensen from Third Wave Games answering a few questions for us. Thank you both for taking your time to answer these so quickly after the games release.
Question: How did the idea for War World come about?
Morten: The Idea originally came from playing the old arcade game Virtual On in the arcades. We wanted to make a game that had a similar feel to the arcades, with instant play and great adrenaline fueled fun for shorter busts of play. We wanted to make a game which was extremely fast, full on and slightly different than many of the slower simulation type Mech Games.
Q: When you set out to make War World was it always planned to be a Mech based tactical shooter?
Johnni: Yes, that idea was there from the start. The original idea was a Mech based Virtual On type game. During development War World evolved quite a bit and many people now think it feels like a mix between Mech Assault and Unreal Tournament.
Q: When in the process of deciding to make War World was it determined it should be for Xbox Live Arcade?
Johnni: We have always believed that Downloadable games are the future, so from the start War World was developed as a Downloadable game. It was not until later that we got the chance to also make it for the Xbox Live Arcade. We think War World is a perfect fit for the Xbox Live Platform and hope people will have fun and enjoy the title.
Q: Was it difficult to develop for Xbox Live Arcade? Morten: When we started development on War World XBLA the limit was 50mb and we wanted War World to be the best looking XBLA game available on Live so we spend a lot of time squeezing Next Gen graphics into a small mb size. Around the middle of development MS decided to increase the limit to 150mb, which made things easier.
The hardest part about developing for Xbox Live Arcade is without a doubt the TCR process – any XBLA game needs to follow strict Microsoft rules for how things should work and it came as a bit of a shock how extremely strict those rules are. It is a big task for a smaller indie studio like ours. So that was definitely the hardest part of making the game, but now we have gone through it, it is definitely going to be much easier next time around. We have now fixed our tech, so that our games are almost TCR ready from the start.
Q: Looking back on War World what are the things that you are most proud of?
Johnni: War World was made by 1 artist, 1 programmer and one Musician. We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished with such a small team. War World is widely recognized as one of the best looking Xbox Live Arcade games available today, we are very proud of this fact and we are proud that gamers out there are having great fun playing War World. Q: Is there anything you were hoping to get into War World that did not make the cut? Morten: We really wanted a very deep customization element to the game, but there just wasn’t time to get this done the way we wanted it. Also we had a great idea for a Story and mission based Single-player game experience, based around the back-story of the planet War World and its fractions and wars. Also we would love to have destructible environments in War World. We have a great list of things :D
Q: What is your preferred Mech to play with? Morten: I really love the Leviathan Commander. I love its size compared to the smaller mechs and its firepower. It is slower than the other mechs, but if you learn its strength and weaknesses in a battle it is super powerful.
Johnni: I just love being a speed demon, so I love the smaller Panther Striker. The trick here is to keep moving and confuse your enemy. It hasn’t got a lot of armour, speed is definitely its strength. Q: Can you give us a few tips and tricks for how to be a better War World player?
Johnni: Its all about tactics and learning how to use the strengths and weaknesses of the different mechs. You cannot use the same tactics for the different type of mechs. They are all different so you need to adapt your playstyle to fit your chosen mech. Skilled players know exactly how to attack with a certain type of mech. Also you should make sure you do not run out of ammo in the middle of a battle and remember to pickup armour/health packs whenever possible. |
