Commander is an epic, classic and lovely tower defense where the path is dynamic: it evolves in time and you can modify it! You can also control spaceships to help you in your mission to save humanity and blow up planets when you have no other choice. What do you want more? Lasers, missiles, particle effects, nice classical music, retro sound effects, cute colorful pixels and a lot of fun.

Fun even with a few small issues.

Commander - World 1 is pretty unique tower defense game. First, there are the brightly colored retro graphics. They are work well for the game but are not something generally seen in this genre of titles. Next is the levels themselves. Since you are defending planets from asteroids in Commander the path that they take moves throughout the course of each level. This keeps things quite challenging since your best towers may move out of range if you are not careful. Later in the levels you can even adjust the path of the asteroids yourself; if you can save up enough money. They towers are fairly strait forward with each level having a few to choose from and each one can up upgraded multiple times to make is stronger. Because you only have a few towers per planet effectively upgrading them is very important. Each upgrade takes longer and costs more money. Time an upgrade wrong and that tower might be out for a while wave of enemies.

I found Commander to be on the more challenging side of things, but not so much so that it is frustrating. It just takes a few tries on each level to find a good layout for the towers and to learn the changes for the enemy's path. Once you find a good combinations of towers you just then have to worry about upgrading them.

The one issue I have with Commander is that when there is a lot of asteroids on the screen on the harder, larger levels the frame rate gets quite choppy and the game stutters somewhat. Killing the enemies seems to alleviate this so maybe I just need better strategies. However, one time on the largest level I had so many enemies on screen the whole game froze after numerous pauses and I had to reboot my Xbox. Once I found a good strategy for that level the issue did not happen again since there were less enemies on screen.

Overall I'm really enjoying Commander - World 1 and hoping that there is a World 2 on the way. The additional strategies that the moving enemy paths brings are a lot of fun.
