Relativity is a god-type strategy/action game, set in a universe which obeys Einstein’s theories of relativity. DON'T PANIC! While Relativity uses some crazy physics concepts you don't need to understand them to play the game. Hopefully some physics will rub off as you are playing and you can impress* your friends in the pub with phrases like "time dilation". *Actual level of impressed may vary

Indie RTS on a console? And it WORKS?

It's pretty rare that you'll find an RTS that works well on a console. It's probably even more rare when you only pay three dollars for it AND it uses physics theories of time and space bending. Enter Relativity.

Relativity by Purple Games is a real-time strategy game set in space. You fly your spaceships out to claim other planets and, eventually, rid the galaxy of the evil Squishians. Gone is the tedious task of mining ore and cutting lumber, replaced instead with having to wait a certain amount of time to build a building or a spaceship. In order to defeat your enemies, you either send ship after ship to their planet and claim it as your own or, with a little more skill and setup, you use space/time bombs and waves to send their planets out of orbit (and off the screen eventually) or into their own sun. Your ships also shoot lasers and can engage enemy ships to make sure they don't do the same to you.

The presentation of Relativity is simple but done without flaw. Outer space is made up of a giant grid with appropriate bends to account for gravity. When your ship goes fast (bending space) or there's a sun nearby, for example, the grid bends around the ship or sun and shows other objects getting pushed or sucked in accordingly. It's not the most ooooh/ahhhh impressive thing ever, but it's done perfectly and lets you know what's going to happen when your ship gets too close to the sun or a large planet (spoiler: it gets sucked in and you die). There's only one background track and the sounds are pretty standard space-combat fare but, with lots of narration and a guy that reminds me of the announcer from F-Zero X (N64) telling me when I have a new building, the game has a good amount of character.

Controls are always huge in a real-time strategy game. Luckily, things flow pretty well in Relativity. One button cycles between your different planets and the game auto-selects whatever planet is on the screen when you hit A (closest to the center when there are multiples). In fact, there isn't even a cursor. This becomes a slight problem when trying to select a specific spaceship out of a large fleet but, in all honesty, that rarely ever comes up and the ships are all identical. On a more local level, you control your ship with your standard responsive dual-stick methods and, aside from getting used to having to stop a LONG time in advance when hurling madly through time and space with your non-upgraded ships (I flew into planets and suns a lot, whoops) I had no problems with the flight controls. If you need to send a lot of ships, though, there's an auto-pilot option that comes in handy. The only additions I believe the controls could use are a way to select multiple ships for the auto-pilot and a quick-scroll method for getting from one side of the map to the other, but otherwise solid controls for a console RTS.

For an indie game, there's a lot to offer here. Ten scenarios and the ability to go back to any of them give a lot of play time for your three bucks. I do wish the game had some sort of online or system link multiplayer for some epic space battles but, with hours of fun strategy gaming for a few dollars, it's difficult to complain. This game is a decent addition to any XBLIG library and a definite recommendation to any RTS fan with a 360.
