A whole lot crammed into the only real spacesim th

Space Pirates from Tomorrow seems to have some trouble in the public eye - some appreciate it for its intentions, and laud it highly. Others choose to hold it under the looking glass and find it lacking. Me? I say both are true.

Space Pirates from Tomorrow is a spacesim game where you can fly around in your own personal sandbox for an eternity. You have the ability to warp between countless solar systems, trade cargo, hunt down criminals (or become one), and generally rule the galaxy from the cockpit. If you played Elite or Wing Commander Privateer, then you know exactly what could be in store for you. The gameplay is responsive, the upgrades are plentiful, and the music is ambient and appropriate. But I can't help but think that it might be a little too much...

Space Pirates from Tomorrow also is perhaps the most ambitious game on XBLIG, and because of that, has met severe hurdles - the games launch, for example, was pulled back a few weeks because of glaring bugs that missed bugtesting, and the crew took the time to repair and tweak a number of other things at this time as per fan request. The end result is much, much better, but you can still see where the graphics could be better, or features are missing (for example, to me, a spacesim means 1:1 sizing, and you'll notice that planets and space stations are embarrassingly scaled down :( ).

Space Pirates from Tomorrow is definitely worth playing, without a doubt, if you're a fan of those old spacesims almost forgotten by time, but unfortunately this game isn't as universal as it could be. I don't blame MStar for this - I think that Space Pirates from Tomorrow is a game too 'big' for XBLIG - it would need a fully-funded XBLA team if not a disc release to include all the features in a fully-formed way. Try the demo, for sure, and if you don't like the demo, be sure to read MStar Games' post-mortem (see hodsey's review for a link to their website), because they deserve the recognition of attempting to make such an amazing game.

Now updated and bug free!!!

I held off doing a review as this game was pulled from the marketplace a couple of days after launch, due to unforseen problems.

The developer via www.mstargames.co.uk and Twitter has been keeping everyone informed of progress with the bugs, and even listened to feedback on things such as colourblind issues, control problems, etc. and now we have an updated and much improved Space Pirates from Tomorrow.

This is very much an Elite-type space shooter, with thousands of hours of gameplay and loads of star systems to discover - it really is probably the biggest Indie game out there...

The controls are tricky at first, but a welcome addition in the new update is the ability to change the controls - having roll / strafe on the bumper buttons, left analogue or right analogue stick.

The graphics are great, and the interactive tutorial with "Holly-esque" voice over (any Red Dwarf fans?!) is excellent. I initially played the trial and thought I'd never be able to play the game, but the tutorial in the full mode teaches you everything you need to know at a great pace.

I was flying around, shooting people out of the skies and raiding their cargo in no time :)

There is so much more to the game, including buying and selling in different markets; upgrading your vehicle, etc.

It really is a massive game, and one that really does raise the bar for Indie game developers.

At only 240 points, this is a must buy!

Lots to do

There is a lot to do in this game but the graphics are mediocre and the controls continually frustrate me.

Exceptional amazing work!

I barely give a 10 - to any game, because there is always s.th. to complain about. At this one its a 10 without doubt. But read:

After you startup the trial / game youre welcomed with that good old C64 loading screen and flashing colours at the background (yes, the ones you got when starting up a game from tape). The fonts are the same as on the good old C64. What a feeling, and what a great idea to start up a game.

You are then introduced by a spoken briefing. That briefing is about basic steering controls, fighting and the overall screen layout. Again, what a great idea on a indiegame. They speech sounds really funny and I havent seen that never before. But step by step.

While listening to these briefing youre overwhelmed by great graphics. Colourful planets, stars, nebulars and asteroids are only a few examples you will look at. How pretty! Even all planets are rotating (as well as all asteroids) and the whole system is full of life. Other space ships, space stations, Police ships, Cargo crates, missiles and ongoing battles between other factions.

Okay, when you have managed to get back to the game after this first impressions you are free to explore a whole universe. Yes a whole. Each system contains at least one space station where you can buy or sell materials. On your way to there sometimes youll receive messages by other people around this world. Again: What a great idea! It adds so much atmosphere to the game, unbelievable!

So as said, you can upgrade your ship with lasers, shields, engine boosts, bonus items (like adding 4 new missiles to your ship for free) at those space stations and not only that, each space station provides a few missions for you to start.

The controls are pretty easy all over the game. Even retail games are missing good controls sometimes. So after you have undocked from a space station its about you where to go. Know a system with agricultur? Why not flying to there, buying some food for a very low price and then flying back to an industrial system to get a pretty good profit out of your trading skills?) Its all about you, what you want to do. You can surely attack other ships to get their crates, but be awared the police is everywhere and they wont forget anything that fast ;)

Well, this game is just too big to make a review. My few lines are just to let you know about some things, but its a lot what you can get out of this game. Nobody ever will write that down :D

So I would suggest trying out the trial at least and have a look on your own. A few gamer perhaps remember Elite and SPfT is pretty much the same with several nice addons in it and other stuff. Highly recommended game! The best currently on indiegames.

In short: What a masterpiece! Download and support!
