The Great Paper Adventure

The Great Paper Adventure is one of the most unique 2D side-scrolling shooters I have ever seen. The game features a very interesting hand drawn art style that has anime art incorporated in it. It features the story of an unnamed hero who is trying to make it to his grandmother's house via a paper spaceship. The special effects, and the awesome soundtrack that help this game really stand out also make this three dollar package worth every cent/point.

Nearly every 2D side-scrolling shooter I've ever played has come with a wide array of weapon upgrades, and TGPA (The Great Paper Adventure) is no exception to that rule. The developer did add their own unique take on the weapons with one called 'The Stuff'. The stuff is basically a weapon that launches toilet paper, and other stuff including an original gameboy handheld console at the onscreen enemies. You will find that there are definite advantages to using certain weapons at certain times during the game.

The levels in TGPA are vivid in color, and look as if they came out of a children's storybook. Don't let this scare you away though, because the game is quite a bit less innocent than it appears. Amongst the levels you will find various types of enemies, and boss characters that are reminescent of ones you'd see in the PARODIUS games. If you're into shooters like I am you'll definitely understand what I'm talking about. For those who aren't quite sure of what I mean, the game includes enemies such as octopi that shoot bullets, and bosses that are food items with cartoon faces. One bossin particular was a bit on the TEEN - MATURE side in my opinion. The boss I speak of was called "The Little Mermaid Zombified". You can imagine what I saw when I went up against that boss. There was no nudity though so that was cool. It's little things like this that make this game more on the not quite innocent side, but in a cool way.

The game controls in TGPA are simple, and only require the use of one button, and a thumbstick to operate. To control your ship you use the left thumbstick, and to shoot you use the right back trigger. The game controls will be easy to pick upon even for newcomers to this genre of video games. One thing I really liked, even though it is small in comparison to other things about the game was that it featured a rumble setting for the controller. It definitely made the game experience feel more personal.

The developer/s of this game seemed to spare no expense in it's creation. The soundtrack by Spintronics was brilliant. The techno/retro music tracks for each level suited the intensity, and theme for that level's design. I thoroughly enjoyed this game from start to finish. I honestly didn't want the game to end. I'm hoping this developer comes out with a sequel that includes more stages, and some cool extras. This is one of those video game gems that most gamers will probably overlook. It's cartoon appearance, and $3 price tag will probably turn many gamers away, but don't be fooled though. This game is definitely a 10!
