poor rpg

I don't quite understand the high rate, Honestly. There are tons of game like that from RPG Maker community, and some really better than that.
The mapping is really poor and not consistent, the musics already heard, and the english is awfull

An hard game not everyone can master

I have played D&D on hard difficulty and it was really woth my 3$. The graphics is amazing for a role playing game, probably the best 2d RPG in the indies but what amazed me was the really complex combat system and the quality of the storytelling.

Excluding some advanced dungeons that you meet by the end of the game all the over 20 hours of exploration and battling were accompained by a huge amount of interactive characters that explain advanced game mechanics and plot in a really fun and entertaining way.

The battles at HARD are really tough to beat and the need to build party skill and inventory comes in a fresh and simple way: you collect gold exploring and fighting, then you are really free to decide how to spend it to focus on AOE damage, single foe damage dealing or boost/debuffing.

It's like World of Warcraft meets Final Fantasy crossover, with a turn based combat that rewards tactical fighting while allowing a more hands-down approach at lower difficulty settings.

The sidequests system also rewards the grinding lover without unbalancing the challenge if you don't care to score the 100% completion during main plot.

One of the worst thing is that even after 20 hours of play i found myself hoping for more story and bosses to beat and the 30 level cap is a little low if you made some very bad choices at the beginning and need to compensate later on.

As Ballbary127 says this is really a must have if you aren't afraid of a good turn based challenge and some really fun story and characters.

An Indie RPG Gem

I've played a lot of RPGs in my day, starting with the first Final Fantasy when it was brand new on the NES. And I absolutely love the RPG renaissance of indie games on XBOX Live. That being said, this is one of the best, if not the best indie RPG on XBOX. I have to say I like it even more than Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves the World.

I agree with the DigitalQuarters review 90% of the way but I really want to reiterate that this is definitely worth purchasing. The story takes a very familiar path that is strewn with inside jokes, and it works. The graphics are actually quite good for an indie game and I absolutely love all the varied NPC portraits. Even the enemies have some uniqueness to them... you may encounter a thief wearing sunglasses or a wolf with a bow on its neck among the normal crowd. I'm not at the point where I can hear the music in my head during the day yet, but I've enjoyed all the tracks in my few hours of playing so far. And that's another point... I've been burned by some seemingly good indie RPGs that end with an empty promise that the story will be continued after just an hour of playtime. This one's the real deal, with 8 hours promised (and I believe that based on my current progress).

The systems are all top notch, and explained in a fun way (the characters reading a pencil-and-paper RPG book). Each character has a good number of equipment slots, interesting passive and active powers, and appropriate growth rates. The money and expeience distribution is good too. In some games you have more money than you know what to do with but this one hits the sweet spot. You always want to spend more than you have so it requires some thought.

My only complaints are the minor spelling/grammar errors and the cover art. I actually held off buying the game because I wasn't a fan of the cover art... It's not particularly bad or anything, but in a game that is heavily JRPG inspired with awesome anime style character portraits, why would it be a more western style cover art?

But seriously, it's a great game, and you will enjoy many hours of RPG goodness.

Delightful & Dorky

XBLIG is home to some seriously stellar RPGs that fit both my nerd-level (read: high) and my amount of free time (read: not high). From the JRPG-style Zeboyd offerings to the more genre-blending Sequence, the service has done me well with games that take less than ten hours yet leave me feeling like I had my fill for the mere pennies I paid. Today, I add another game to that distinguished list: Doom & Destiny.

Doom & Destiny from Heartbit Interactive/Benjamin Ficus is a JRPG that puts you in control of a group of tabletop gamers as they get summoned to save a world from some unknown evil entity. Yeah, a bunch of ordinary dudes saving a fantasy world from disaster isn't exactly the pinnacle of plot originality. Within ten seconds of playing the game and witnessing two evil scientist sprites giving each other a bro-filled high-five after recalling the previous night's lurid activities, however, you'll see why it doesn't matter; the game never takes its story too seriously. Just enough to get you from point A to point B and supply a healthy amount of nerdy laughter and RPG cliches in the process.

So, as much as the story isn't a very serious take on a fantasy setting, the character leveling is the exact opposite. As someone who grew up with the 16-bit offerings from Square and Enix (before they merged), I can honestly say this is probably my favorite customization system in a JRPG. With each level up, you're allowed to allocate three points among your four stats: Might (affects HP and attack), Charisma (MP and magic), Grit (status resistance and critical hit percentage), and Dexterity (evade percentage and character speed). If this was all there was to it, that'd be a decent RPG with alright options. However, you also purchase and equip powers or training over the course of the game that, in addition to giving you spells and abilities, will raise and lower certain stats. For example, your normally spell-heavy mage can raise his MP even higher, but at the cost of his HP. Or his speed at the cost of his critical hit percentage. Or, hell, his attack at the cost of his magic. So if I want to have a mage that beats the ever loving crap out of things in this game then there's nothing there to stop me. Many of the items do the same thing, giving you such a large amount of character customization that even the more traditional roles are fun to create. Because YOU created them.

The battle system is pretty straight-up JRPG, but it's done to speed things along rather than bog the player down. Battles can be sped up by holding LT. This causes everyone to simply swing at whatever is closest, but as with most RPGs you'll do that anyway, and you can let go of the trigger and actually use your other options at any point in time. There's a nice FFX-style timeline at the top of the screen to show you who's going to take their turn when, and the whole system (much like FFX) makes each encounter feel like a miniature tactics-based battle. Which, for the tabletop gamers like myself, keeps things interesting all the way from beginning to end.

Presentation, unfortunately, is where the game loses its score point. The music is decent and the sprites and character drawings are exactly what you'd expect from an old-school JRPG (big-headed sprites, manga-infused drawings), but a lot of the dialogue is hit with grammar and spelling errors. Does that sound a bit picky? Maybe. But we're talking near-GameFAQs forum levels at times. In the defense of the creators, the writing is done by an Italian who (I'm pretty sure) speaks and writes English as a second (or maybe third?) language. He even apologizes in the credits for all the spelling mistakes. Does it still bother me? Yes, but I can understand the reason, and the overall experience isn't ruined by the poor editing. Just slightly tarnished.

Lack of proofreading aside, Doom & Destiny is fun all the way from the beginning to the eight-hour-later ending. A giant overworld map, four save slots, three difficulty levels and plenty of customization provides for a small amount of trial and error or exploration along the way, so in all honesty you'll probably spend very close to ten hours total with the game in one run and obviously more if you want to swing through again once you're finished. For the small asking price of 80 MSP it's difficult to pass this up, even if you're only the slightest RPG fan.
