LaserBreaker is a fun game in which you have to destroy a target employing laser shots of four different colours. In each stage the target is protected by some blocks, which only can be destroyed by laser of its own colour.

The Prettiest Trial and Error on XBLIG

Ever go to a used car dealership and make an impulse buy based on how good a car looks? Get inside and you're as happy as can be. Start driving it...and you find out the car doesn't turn 100% of the time. And once you get to a highway, you can't leave 2nd gear. This, sadly, sums up my heartbreaking experience with Laserbreaker.

Laserbreaker can best be described as a combination of Breakout and Puzzle Bobble. Each board has a target for you to hit and a bunch of blocks to stand in your way. Each block is one of the four colors of your controller buttons (red, blue, green, yellow for B, X, A, Y), and you're given a set amount of lasers to aim and hit said target. Each laser has a specific color and will bounce off every block that isn't its own color. If it hits its color, both the block and laser vanish. Hits you, you start the level over and lose a life. Early puzzles are pretty simple while later puzzles crank the difficulty up to eleven. Pretty straightforward. There's a plot in there as well (and is actually a really cool creation story), though the only tie it has to the game itself is that you can't read more until you pass that Age (five more stages).

The visuals and sound on the game would fit right at home as a XBLA title. The game looks as polished as anything professionally done. Blocks look shiny and clear and each stage has an artistic background image that seems to match that stage's story. Some of the music is hit or miss based on what kind of electronic music you prefer (Age 3's music is in my head as I write this), but it's all pretty well done. The only knock I have is that the sound of your laser bouncing off everything gets grating when it hits blocks 400 times within a second, but there's always volume control for that sort of thing.

Control is pretty standard and easy for a game like this. Move left and right with the left stick, aim with the right stick, and fire with the corresponding face button. Aiming in the right spot, however, is anything but easy, and having a guide for the first few stages so you got used to the angles would've been a nice touch. A fine-adjust option would be good as well, such as with LB and RB.

Early stages can be won with little to no effort. As you're playing further and further into the game, however, you start realizing how much trial and error is present. It's somewhat rectified by a practice mode where you can try stages you've previously reached, but since the lasers can bounce off things and kill you, you'll probably be forced to move and throw away all that careful aiming and placement. This leads to a lot of frustration when you go through a ton of lives on one stage and are forced to start over all the way at the beginning, and all an "easier" mode does for you is give you a couple more lives to start with. In addition to this, there are some odd glitches in the game that happened more frequently than I'd prefer. I've had a few lasers move right through the center of a block, others bounce off the side of a block but continue to move straight, and more than a few times I've watched as lasers go right through me. In a game that focuses so much on precision, having such variation on what can happen in the most simple of mechanics (having something bounce like it should) adds a lot of frustration to a game that's already quite difficult.

In the end, Laserbreaker is an interesting idea, and a game that looks and sounds better than most XBLIG titles on the Marketplace. With such unforgiving trial and error gameplay on later stages coupled with some very randomly-but-often glitches at the somewhat steep price of 400 MS Points, however, I definitely recommend trying the demo before you plunk down the money on it. The idea deserves some love, but the things that unfortunately hold it back add up fast.

It is an interesting combination of game types here. The game plays pretty nicely but I found it very difficult to aim accurately and the sound effects got old pretty fast. Still if you like this sort of game it is pretty fun.

Really nice

I don't like puzzle games, but yesterday I downloaded the demo of Laserbreaker. I wondered whay this game could cost 400MP... and I bought it. I had to do it. Laserbreaker is a really nice game, well done and very well developed. Graphics are very polished and the level design is done with much care. My son is playing it from yesterday. You must download the demo, I think you will like this game.
