Slick but massively flawed.

I played the demo of MagicalCube and was really impressed. The game is a 5x5 grid of colored blocks that can be moved vertically or horizontally. The object, is simply to move the board around to form groups of at least 3 blocks that have the same color. When 3 same colored blocks align they dissapear and new random blocks fall into their positions.

The game seems to mix aspects of the Rubiks Cube with Bejeweled. But it is a little more complicated. You play the role of a Witch in training, and making groups of blocks fills your magic meter. Depending on the colors, once the magic meter gets high enough you launch an attack spell on your opponent.

Meanwhile your opponent is attacking you based on black dots that appear on some of the blocks. If you don't erase those blocks within a set time, the black dot floats into your opponents magic meter and becomes power for their spells.

Other items and objects also appear on the blocks during gameplay. Some are your oppenents special moves, Some are locks that prevent that row or column from being moved. On the beneficial side, coins appear that if erased go into your piggy bank and can be exchanged between rounds for equipment upgrades to make you stronger, opponents slower, more money appear, etc.

Sounds like the elements for a pretty fun little game, right? Wrong.

The first two levels are nice little relaxing levels which provide little or no challenge to the player. Then we move to level 3. If level 1 and 2 are supposed to coincide with difficulty, then level 3 should be somewhere around level 99. The opponents special move makes the board slide one extra square, so you have to completely change your brain to things one block before where you want them. At the same time, a ridiculous number of enemy spell dots are appearing as well as multiple locks (I've seen 4 at a time). This level is a final level for any puzzle game in North America. The puzzle genre over here is generally suited for females and older gamers. This game is clearly meant for teenage boys in Japan. I can believe asian teenage boys who I've seen doing rubik's cubes in 13 seconds on TV could handle level 3. But you won't find many people who could deal with it in the general public.

Lesson to be learned - Have your games playtested by regular people, not programmers.

Why this feels like a scam? Simply because the demo offers no inclination of what your about to be hit with. You'll never get past level 2 in the demo because of the time constraint. So you buy this thinking your going to get a fun little puzzle game, and instead you get a game that almost instantly becomes something that wasn't advertised. Poor show. Originally I rated this game a 4, it's been changed to a 1.
