Details

Price $15 (1200 Points)
Release Date August 06, 2008

Manipulate the flow of time. Rescue the Princess. Contemplate the world; save yourself. The full version of Braid allows you to visit all the worlds, and thus use all the time-manipulation powers. Perhaps you will find the Princess and rescue her. [ESRB: E10+ (EVERYONE 10+) LANGUAGE, MILD CARTOON VIOLENCE] Single Player, HD (High Definition).

Features

Braid is a puzzle-platformer, drawn in a painterly style, where the player manipulates the flow of time in strange and unusual ways. From a house in the city, journey to a series of worlds and solve puzzles to rescue an abducted princess. In each world, you have a different power to affect the way time behaves, and it is time's strangeness that creates the puzzles. The time behaviors include: the ability to rewind, objects that are immune to being rewound, time that is tied to space, parallel realities, time dilation, and perhaps more. Braid treats your time and attention as precious; there is no filler in this game. Every puzzle shows you something new and interesting about the game world.

  • Forgiving yet challenging gameplay: Braid is a 2-D platform game where you can never die and never lose. Despite this, Braid is challenging—but the challenge is about solving puzzles, rather than forcing you to replay tricky jumps.
  • Rich puzzle environment: Travel through a series of worlds searching for puzzle pieces, then solving puzzles by manipulating time: rewinding, creating parallel universes, setting up pockets of dilated time. The gameplay feels fresh and new; the puzzles are meant to inspire new ways of thinking.
  • Aesthetic design: A painterly art style and lush, organic soundtrack complement the unique gameplay.
  • Nonlinear story: A nonlinear fiction links the various worlds and provides real-world metaphors for your time manipulations; in turn, your time manipulations are projections of the real-world themes into playful "what-if" universes where consequences can be explored.
  • Nonlinear gameplay: The game doesn't force you to solve puzzles in order to proceed. If you can't figure something out, just play onward and return to that puzzle later.

This game is tedious enough to make you want to look up walkthroughs on youtube and end the frustration.

If you love puzzle games, buy it. If your just looking to pass the time, buy something really fun with your 15 dollars.

A very fun game but not much replayability to it. It's rather short as well. Some of the pieces require quite a bit of thinking that make you feel proud if you've actually figured them out yourself.

A triumph of artistic vision as well as gameplay. Braid suffers a bit in the replay value category, but is a champ in the making you think category. Keep the internets close by for walkthroughs/hints and explanations of the story. A must-play.

Braid hit Xbox Live pretty hard, and it really made a name for itself quickly. It's a 2d side-scroller where the player can manipulate time and objects within the world.

If you're even thinking of considering a purchase, you MUST enjoy puzzles, riddles, and at times, frustration. The game will have you memorize patterns, sometimes changing them, and you'll yell at your TV at times.

While it's a decent challenge, it's got enough charm to keep you going back for more, and it's a very artistic game in terms of its visual style. Although it's slightly expensive, it's definitely earned its spot in my XBLA collection!

Love the puzzles. The game doesn't explain a lot on how to use your "powers", but that's just another puzzle. The dev said something along the lines of "every puzzle is completely solvable". Occasionally frustrating, but always...

The upcoming PC version is the one to get, but if you just can't wait, you really cannot go wrong with the XBLA version.

Braid got a lot of praise and, overall, it's deserved. It's clever, it looks great and the music is wonderful.

The use of time alteration in the game is novel and handled better than in any other time-related game I've played thus far. Some may find the puzzles using this mechanic overly confusing, but some may just breeze through them. In general, I've found if I'm stuck, I'm just thinking too damn hard.

The game is short, but the experience is significant. It's worth noting that if you get all of the puzzle pieces and finish the game, there's essentially no reason to come back to it. It's fun to play through and worth the money, but don't expect to come back to it next week.

I recently picked this title up when it was on sale for 800 MS points. It is an excellent game and well deserves all the accolades. So you ask....why rate it a 9 then?
The graphics are wonderful, the music is great, but the later puzzles can get a bit frustrating for some. Perhaps a bit more in the way of a tutorial would be nice. The story telling reminds me a bit of Eternal Sonata which was a little bit of a turn off as well (a little pretentious) and I think it could have been improved. I feel like some people will just ignore the crux of the story and simply care about solving the puzzles.
I feel it is well worth it at the 800 price point. At 1200 I would definitely try the demo first.

Braid is one of those games that ciritcs LOVE. I have lost track of how many reviews I have read that have claimed 'Braid' is the first game that actually feels like playable art. While I would agree with that, to an extent, the game is certainly NOT worth $15. It's too short, has no multiplayer, and has almost zero replayability. After taking the $15 plunge, I am happy with the game.....but it's not the sure-fire purchase that most critc reviews want you to believe.

When I first started playing 'Braid', I thought it was a Mario rip-off. It's a side-scrolling platformer that harkens back to the old 8/16-bit Mario games. After a couple levels, though, it adds the ability to manipulate time. Now while 'time-manipulation' is certainly not a revoulutionary thing in games these days, the way Braid uses it is fun. At it's heart, this game is a platforming puzzle/riddle game that forces you to think "outside the box" to finish most of the levels. It is a great gameplay expericence and I think everyone should at least check out the demo.

The game looks fantastic and is one of the first things that will draw you in. The art style is gorgeous and the game is very polished. Another impressive part of the presentation is the music. And the story that Braid attempts to tell is good, even if it's told in about the most bland way possible (by reading a series of text books before each level).

The problem with Braid is the fact that it's over too quickly and they are charging you $5 more than they should. Nothing this game does is revolutionary in any way and it basically rips off several other games. It just puts those things all together in a very fancy and artsy package. While that is not a bad thing (as the game is still quite good), this game is not the "greatest thing since sliced bread" like some people are calling it. This game reminds me of one of those artsy films that comes out that critics rave about, wins awards, and people like.....but after you see it, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about even though you enjoyed the experience. For a $15 price tag, it certainly should have been longer and displayed the story better. While I am not upset that I own this game, as I really enjoyed it, I would recommend cheking out the trial version before any purchase.

Simply put it, Braid is amazing. It uses time not only as a game mechanic, but as the puzzles themselves. With a story that braids(hehe) along the gameplay beautifully, memorizing music, and great art, Braid isn't a game you want to miss.

Braid is an excellent addition to anybody's arcade collection. The time control, art style, and music all help add a new spin on classic side scrolling platformers. It does take a bit of thinking however, but you really get into it after a while so the frustration quickly wears off.

This game is a puzzle take on classic side scrollers like mario. You manipulate time to get to keys and doors, make jumps, and save a princess. The music and art are awesome. The story element is also cool and you have to play it to the end to fully understand it (still not sure that I do, but I really liked the last level's premise). Its priced at $15 and with time trials to add to the replay value it is a little steep, but worth it.

I fell in love with Braid for the inventive puzzle, mechanics, and twist ending (same as portal) and spent hours trying to figure out how it worked. Once done, however, I was surprised to find how I could run through it again in under an hour durring my second playthrough. That's when the extra charm of the game kicks in, not just in solving the puzzles, but perfecting the playthough. It unveils a new level of grace in the game while attempting to race through the sections.

Amazing game, and it is a must play. For anyone who says it is "too pricey". Think of it two ways you are paying for quality this isn't a game of frogger with a new skin the entire game was hand painted, and two this is a new company and sometimes they actually need money *gasp. Anyway...

The purpose of this game is using you noodle, you can't die or even lose for that matter. It is a puzzle game that will rack your brain at several parts. The best time for this game is when you just want to sit back and have some fun. It isn't intense of require amazing timing.

I definitely agree that this is an amazing and fun game the 1 and only real time you play through it, but feel the lack of replay value brings the enjoyment down. I do like the sense of accomplishment the game gives you and that though you can't die it doesn't make it any easier. Very creative design, and AMAZINGLY well done. It is like playing a painting at an art gallery.

For that reason I find the $15 reasonable. If you look at it as a piece of art more than a game. I was proud to pay for it because it means I'm helping promote a game like this and the idea. Without support original ideas die and all that remains is "Maddin XXIVIVIX" in our gaming future

Braid is a good game. I will not deny this. It looks great, it plays great, there are no gameplay glitches, it is a good game. For those of you who like puzzle games, mind-benders, riddles, and similar items, you will be sold. Don't worry about save points, or messing up, because you have the awesome ability to rewind time and get rid of your mistakes. Some of the puzzle solutions are mind-blowing in their complexity and cleverness. This game astounds me each time I play it.

My only gripe about Braid is the same thing that makes it such a good game! It's so incredibly difficult and infuriating if you can't "think outside the box" or you get stuck and can't think of anything else to try. It's gotten to a point where I can only try it every once in awhile when I have a good deal of patience built up :) If you want to give the game a try before pitching out the hefty 1200 point price tag, the demo does the game good justice. If you like the demo, it is worth the purchase.

Braid is a great example of what the exposure of independent development will lead to. The art style, the game-play, the puzzles ... they would never see the light of day as a big studio release. And while some may gripe about the price, we have all spent $50 on far worse games before.

Braid is a shining example of how games can be art. Everything from the visuals to the story telling are done so much differently than other games, and instead of being confusing or lame, it's refreshing. The art style is tops here. Everything in the world just... fits. It's a grim fairy tale look; nice and fantastical on the outside but you can just sense that there's dark and sinister undertones. The story is played out in paragraphs before each series of puzzle-laden levels, and while it may be a lazy way of telling the story, it's effective. It's incredibly open to interpretation, so playing this game in a sub-mental state or after tossing back a few might not put you in the best position to understand what's going on. Or hell, maybe you NEED to be drunk to understand, whatever works for ya.

The puzzles are the bread and butter of any puzzle game (go figure), and I'm happy to say that Braid keeps you on your toes in that department. Each of the six worlds has it's own quirk, whether it be having areas that are immune to your time shifting abilities, having time being related to your movement, or giving you the ability to slow down time in a given area. None of them are explicitly explained, which makes the puzzles more satisfying when you figure them out.

All in all, while the price knocked down the rating by one point, it's still definitely recommended.

Braid attempts to be the poster child of games as art, but suffers from ego problems.
Visually Braid is amazing and I doubt many will argue against that. The multi-layering is well done and the stylized graphics all share the same feeling. Nothing in the braid universe looks out of place which is quite admirable.
The storyline of Braid is where things start to get shaky. The developers decided to lump the story before the levels in the blandest fashion possible. You read a few paragraphs of text listed across a few signs on the ground. I have yet to see anyone get more than a sign or two into a section before blowing off the rest of the text. We have been dealing with storytelling through text since before home consoles ever existed and I have never seen such a half hearted way of telling a tale.
The puzzles which are the core of the game play are initially interesting, but when the puzzles are repeated with variants the interest plummets with the game play into mediocrity. The difficulty of the puzzles is often not a question of complexity but a matter of precision timing which is a cheap tactic repeated often in this title. Also, depending on what you consider and homage or intellectual theft you may or may not appreciate the “borrowed” aspects of the game.
When it all comes down to it Braid is like that good looking girl who can only repeat sound bytes in a monotone voice. Nothing new here. Nothing ground breaking and nothing more than a flash in the pan during a slow release season.
Games can be art, but this is not art.
