Lost it's Spark

Like Sonic 4 Rocket Knight ticks all the right boxes on paper.

HD sequel of a beloved 16bit era platformer, endearing main character with unique skills and classic platforming gameplay that's rare
In this world of ultra realistic gaming.

What could have been a recipe for delight is let down by a lack of heart. Everything seems so hollow and the result is a game that is made to capitilise on the Rocket Knight to make cash rather than a project made by people that genuinely care for the franchise and it's fans.

A Great, But Not Fantastic, Reimagining

Rocket Knight is a return to the classic Sparkster series. Featuring wild and varied platforming, it promises to recapture the old school magic in the same way that Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Megaman 9 and Megaman 10 accomplished. Konami did a good job, but they didn’t really hit the nail on the head.

Rocket Knight follows Sparkster, an opossum with a rocket pack. Sparkster fights for the freedom of his people, and dons his arms and armour when the Wolf armies attack his homeland. The storyline plays out over four worlds, which totals to under three or four hours of gameplay on the normal mode. This length is expanded with an unlockable “Hard” mode and Gold Sparkster, which seriously ramps up the competition and playtime, and the included leaderboard can have you fighting with your friends to be the best at the game.

The game is a 2.5D platformer, which is basically a 2D platformer where the camera shifts or reorients to provide a more actiony adventure. It works very well, and helps to turn an old-school genre into a high-def new feeling, and it’s not so over-used to be disorienting. The gameplay is similar to other Sparkster titles, but the rocket mechanic has certainly been more forgiving – while the basic jump & slash tactic is there, anyone familiar with a sidescroller will be zipping around the map easily. As far as controls go, the buttons are multi-mapped to shoulder and trigger buttons as well, so you have a few options in how you hold the controller, and I only had a single gripe about actual mechanics – the almost-industry-standard feature of holding down while falling to pass through climbable material is missing, which means your opossum has annoyingly sticky fingers.

Rocket Knight doesn’t really capture the magic of other re-created old titles, but I don’t mean to say that it does anything wrong: It is a competent remake with a lot of character and flair. Characters are well animated, and though words of dialogue aren’t spoken, the storyline does flow along logically. Bosses are over-the-top large, and on higher difficulties, insidiously powerful. The achievements are a mix of casual accomplishments and nasty bragging rights, so completionists will have their work cut out for them.

Rocket Knight might not win any awards for revolutionizing anything, but it certainly has all the right ingredients for a fun, high-def, single player platformer.
