In Rock of Ages your enemy is hiding behind their castle gates and it’s going to take the force of a gigantic, steam-rolling boulder - controlled by you - to crush them! Be mindful of the defenses they place though, and place good ones yourself, as you race to smash through to triumph across a number of stages inspired by various periods in classic art history! That is the game's description, but it does not really do justice to how funny this game is. While I was playing it at E3 2011 I was surprised to find a lot of strategy is involved in this action game.
You are playing as a giant boulder that rolls down a mountain to try and smash open a castle door. The faster you hit the door, and the larger you are when you hit it, the more damage you do. So, as you roll down the mountain you want to keep your speed up, but without running into any obstacles which will chip off pieces of the boulder making it smaller. After you make it down the mountain it takes a few seconds for your boulder to reset. During this time you can use money from the building you smash to buy defenses for you're opponents track. The defenses include things like towers, catapults, sheep, cows and exposive barrels. It is on defense that you need to use some strategy to decide which objects should be placed on the level and where at. Personally, I filled an area with explosive barrels and then put two rows of animals behind it so my opponent would get stuck in the barrels and get damaged a lot.
With an August release date you can tell that things are nearly complete as the game feels really polished. The controls of the boulder feels like you have some weight behind it, but as you get smaller it is easier to turn and control. Visually there is a distinct Monty Python vibe mixed in with the 3D objects but 2D people in the world. For me that made things funnier as I was rolling a boulder over people who were already flat and just would fall over on their backs. If you are looking for a mix of strategy and action to play against your friends be sure to check out Rock of Ages when it releases.
