I got some hands on time with DeathSpank at E3 2010 this week and I've got to say I'm pretty impressed. I was not able to get an exact release date but it is slated to come out this summer. Here is the official description if you've not heard of DeathSpank.
"Described by top scientists as Monkey Island meets Diablo, DeathSpank's gameplay is divided between uncovering the epic story via conversations, solving complex puzzles, equipping your character to maximize his dispensing of justice, not to mention his charming good looks, plus battling just about anything that moves. As DeathSpank vanquishes evil and heroes the downtrodden, he will collect loot, level up, collect loot, acquire new abilities and of course, collect loot."
I spent about 15 minutes playing DeasthSpank after watching someone else for about 5 minutes. It was not enough time to get really deep but enough to get me hooked. The graphical look of the game is really well done in a comic animated style. The dialog was hilarious as was pretty much everything about the game. As you start the game you face lower level enemies like "vicious chickens" that lose their feathers when you attack them. So, you have all these featherless chickens running around until you kill them. You can then collect their lips to turn in for a quest. Another example is that when you want to fast travel you have to go to the nearest outhouse to teleport. The game had me laughing the whole time I was playing.
The combat is pretty strait forward with a different weapon or attack mapped to the four main controller buttons. So, you can easily switch from your ranged attack with a crossbow to a sword and ax combo just by using the different face buttons. I leveled up a couple times during my play session and each time I was presented with three upgraded bonuses to choose from in addition to the general stat upgrades. These bonuses were things like +10% defense, +3% attack speed and +5% range. This allowed me to customize the strengths of my character to my play style without being overly complex.
DeathSpank will take around 15 hours to complete if you just power through the main story line but like most RPGs if you take the time to level up your character and do side quests it will be two or three times that long. Personally, I can't wait for it to release.
